Is It Acne or Rosacea? How to Tell the Difference

Red bumps, breakouts and sensitivity can be confusing. Many people treat rosacea as if it were acne and end up more irritated than before. At Thorold Medical Aesthetics & Skin Care, we see both conditions every week – and they need very different care.

What Is Acne?

Acne happens when pores become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. It can show as blackheads, whiteheads, tender red spots, and sometimes deep cysts.

Typical signs of acne:

  • Oilier areas – often forehead, nose, and chin
  • Blackheads and whiteheads
  • Inflamed spots that may leave marks or scars
  • Can affectthe  face, chest, and back

What Is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the blood vessels and skin barrier, especially on the central face.

Typical signs of rosacea:

  • Persistent redness across cheeks, nose, chin, or forehead
  • Flushing or burning sensation, especially with heat, stress, alcohol, or spicy food
  • Visible tiny blood vessels (telangiectasia)
  • Small red bumps that look like acne but often feel hot or stingy
  • Rosacea skin is usually sensitive and easily irritated by harsh products or scrubs.

Why It Matters to Know the Difference

Acne products are often too strong for rosacea and can make redness and burning much worse. At the same time, very rich creams that suit dry rosacea might clog pores in acne-prone skin. That’s why a proper assessment is so important – especially if you’ve been red, reactive or breaking out for a long time.

How We Approach Acne vs Rosacea in Clinic

At Thorold Medical Aesthetics & Skin Care, we:

  • Take a full skin and medical history
  • Look at patterns of redness, oiliness, and scarring
  • Identify possible triggers (heat, hormones, skincare, stress, diet, medications)
  • Create a plan that may include gentle medical skincare, peels, microneedling or laser for redness and, when needed, medical input from Dr. Kaufmann

Not Sure Whether It’s Acne or Rosacea?

Book a skin consultation at Thorold Medical Aesthetics & Skin Care and we’ll help you understand what’s going on – then design a plan that respects your skin’s sensitivity and long-term health.

What to Expect at Your First Skin Consultation

Booking a skin consultation can feel a little nerve-racking if you’re not sure what will happen. Our goal at Thorold Medical Aesthetics & Skin Care is to make your first visit calm, friendly, and genuinely helpful – with no pressure to commit to anything you’re not ready for.

Step 1: Welcome & Medical History

We start by getting to know you. You’ll be asked about your skin concerns, previous treatments, medical history, medications, and allergies. This helps us keep you safe and choose options that make sense for your health as well as your skin.

Step 2: Skin Analysis

Next, we carefully examine your skin in good light. We look at texture, pores, pigmentation, redness, oiliness, and sensitivity. In some cases, we may use digital skin analysis or magnification to see what’s happening beneath the surface.

We might ask questions like:

  • When did this problem start?
  • What makes it better or worse?
  • What skincare are you using at home?

There are no “wrong” answers – it’s simply information to build the right plan.

Step 3: Treatment & Homecare Recommendations

Once we understand your skin and your goals, we’ll talk you through suitable options. This may include:

  • In-clinic treatments (for example, peels, microneedling, facials, laser, injectables)
  •  A simple home routine using professional skincare
  •  Lifestyle tips that support skin health (SPF, triggers, gentle habits)

We’ll explain what each option does, expected downtime, how many sessions you may need and a clear estimate of costs.

Step 4: Your Questions

This is your time to ask anything – from “Is this safe for my skin tone?” to “How will this fit around my work schedule?” We encourage you to be honest about your budget, comfort level, and expectations so we can tailor everything properly.

Step 5: Deciding Your Next Step

There is no pressure to book a treatment on the spot. Some people like to start with a facial or peel straight away; others prefer to go home, think about it and book later online or by phone. Whatever you choose, you’ll leave with a clearer understanding of your skin and realistic options.
